During February 2024, Black History Month at New Leaf fostered a more inclusive and enriching educational experience, promoting diversity, empathy, and a deeper understanding of history and society. This month raised awareness and education, highlighting the significant contributions and achievements of Black individuals and communities. It also provided opportunities for leaning about the cultural heritage of Black communities, including their traditions, art, and music.
Staff collaborated with individuals supported to prepare three participants to submit their artwork to The Newmarket African Caribbean Canadian Association (NACCA) Black History Month 2024 Art Exhibition, co-organized with the Town of Newmarket at the Old Town Hall. The exhibition’s theme, ‘”Ain’t No Stoppin’ Us Now’: Telling Our Story, Writing Our History,” aimed to empower Black residents in York Region by providing a platform to share stories of 1 strength, courage, and innovation through various art forms. Artists were encouraged to interpret and express the theme in their unique styles and perspectives.
